Character info

Series/Fandom: Hercules - The movie, but I’m gap filling with info from the series to round him out more.
Character's Name: Hermes
Character's Sex: Male
Character's Age: Not certain
Canon point: During the movie, before Herc grows up to adulthood

Abilities: Hermes is most well known for his speed and his ability to fly, but being a god he is also endowed with other strengths. Like the rest of the Pantheon he is immortal, so he is unable to die. This does not however prevent him from falling prey to other spells, and curses, etc. For example when Hades threw a pool party at the pool of forgetfulness he lost his memories after coming in contact with the sinister liquid the same as Zeus and the other Gods and Goddesses. The other basic powers that a God possesses is omnipresence, being able to glow with a sort of blue aura, and being stronger than regular mortals. The pantheon in Hercules never seems to use this omnipresence ability to any great degree, they even make jokes about how underused it is, so I can’t see that really coming into play.

Strengths:

Hermes acts as the herald of the Gods and Goddesses of the Greek Pantheon so he has to be swift. In one of the episodes his speed is displayed when Hercules and his friends complain about the slow service at the “speedy pita”. Hermes takes it upon himself to fly into the kitchen and take over, showing his lightning fast abilities to work and move. He ends up making piles of food in a matter of seconds whereas it would have taken an average mortal a lot more time to accomplish. Another one of his strengths is his ability to fly, it certainly makes it much easier to deliver messages and proclamations in either the mortal world or on Mount Olympus. He has shown some skill with a lyre.

Weaknesses:

Despite his status as a God, Hermes is still susceptible to magic, potions, spells, reweaving the tapestry of fate… anything like that. Throughout the series he manages to get captured, nearly placed into an eternal slumber, and a myriad of other obstacles. He often has to rely on someone like Hercules to set everything to rights. Hermes is not much of a fighter. He does try to help out when a situation arises but he’s rather ineffectual. His comparatively smaller stature to the other Gods and Goddesses probably doesn’t help him in that area. He has no minions to do his bidding, or anything like that.

Background:
Wiki

When you first see Hermes he’s attending a party celebrating the birth of Zues and Hera’s son, Hercules. This joyous occasion was cut short by the tragic events that followed. While most of the Gods and Goddesses shared in the festivities, there was one that saw the birth of an heir a threat to his own designs. Hades, the lord of the Underworld, consulted the fates about the young tot and learned that if Hercules opposed him, he would be unable to conquer Olympus. Therefore, Hades plotted to destroy the baby by having him turned mortal then slaying him. Fortunately for Hercules, Pain and Panic failed to have him drink the entire potion so he was not turned completely mortal, and retained his strength. The minions tried to cover up their tremendous botch however it would eventually come to Hades attention. This event hit Olympus hard, and all the Gods and Goddesses scoured the planet to find young Hercules. When they found him, it was too late. He could not return to Mount Olympus as he was no longer a God. Hermes is later shown to be quite protective of Hercules, probably due in part to the way he’d been wrenched away from the Pantheon so early in life and due to his own closeness to Zeus and Hera. As it was stated earlier he acts as a messenger between the members of the Pantheon and Earth. You see him flitting about and doing just that later. Not only that but at meetings of the Pantheon, Hermes is the one that announces what was covered in the previous meeting, what is to be covered in the current meeting, and he keeps track of the votes if an issue is being voted on. Not much else was revealed in terms of the winged messengers back story save for the fact that he is derived from actual Greek mythology. Disney, however, was fairly loose with it’s interpretation of the ancient stories.

Appearance:
Hermes

Personality:

Hermes is one of the most relaxed and mellow of all the Gods and Goddesses. He takes most situations in stride save for the occasional unique circumstance. As the herald/announcer/secretary to the Pantheon, Hermes is an organized individual. He’s always prompt with his deliveries and meticulous in recording details sometimes much to the chagrin of the other deities if they have to sit through one of his recaps. Even though Hades has given the other deities plenty of reasons to be leery of them, Hermes can be quite gullible when Hades proposes something. For example, when pain and panic go to the gates of Olympus with the intent of passing out invitations to Hades pool party, Hermes doesn’t question the motivation behind said party. He gladly passes out the invitations for them. It should be noted that Hermes does enjoy parties, and this could be part of why he went along unquestioningly. You also see this love of parties in other stories such as The Bacchanal.

On occasion, Hermes displays more good sense than some of the other Gods. When the sun went missing under Hercules care, and the Pantheon was debating whether or not to vote Zeus out of office for appointing his son to the job, Hermes was the only one that questioned why Hades had a tan when he arrived at the meeting. Hades quickly silenced him, and there was no follow up but none of the others found the circumstance at all peculiar. As I stated earlier, Hermes is a bit protective of Hercules and is willing to stand up for him. On Titan Smiting Day, Hercules was invited to spend time with his parents on Cloud 33 an exclusive gathering place for the Pantheon. When the maitre d’ insisted that only Gods were allowed here, Hermes rushed forward and set the man straight. In another instance where Hermes had Hercules back was when Phil wanted to attend the half-human convention but didn’t think he could leave Hercules behind to housesit. Hermes was the one that convinced Phil that Hercules could handle the job, and he stuck around to make sure everything went swimmingly.

He tends to refer to people using either their names, variants of their names, or with slang. As he stated in one instance, “I call everyone babe, babe.” Babe is only one of the many slang words he uses in his speech. He’s referred to Hercules as Herc, Herc-ster, Herc-inator or Phil as Phil-lissimo, etc. He seems to have the mentality that as long as things turn out for the better than everything is fine and dandy. Back to the aforementioned island-sitting incident, when Hercules ended up throwing a huge party annoying Poseidon with the noise and the island was sunk, Herc and Hermes went on a quest to restore the island. When they managed to convince Poseidon to raise it back up, Hermes saw no reason to tell Phil what happened and was surprised when Hercules told him anyway.

Hermes never seems to anger easily, and when he is irritated it tends to fade quickly. Even when he’s in a hurry and trying to get around others he is polite.. Such as when he went to the celebration for Hercules birth. He was in a hurry to give his congratulations to Hera and Zeus and had to zip around the other gods to get there. He might not have lingered to hear their responses but he did say Excuse me. He does have a sense of humor about things, and is willing to cross-dress if it’s for a good cause.

Strengths:

Hermes greatest strength personality-wise is his ability to go with the flow. That’s not to say he won’t do anything to help if something goes awry but he doesn’t let it get him down or cripple him. It also encourages opponents to underestimate him. He’s not very threatening as deities go and is able to get closer to a wider variety of people, mortal and immortal. He’s a little more observant than some of the other members of the Pantheon but he doesn’t always use this to his advantage. He’s friendly, personable, and prompt. He’d never be late for an appointment and he’s good at organizing meetings. Hermes is an optimist, and isn’t one to wallow in grief or self pity. In this sense he’s resilient.

Weaknesses:

To put it bluntly, he can be naïve, overly trusting, and easily mislead. The number of times he is tricked by Hades alone is staggering. While not alone in this folly it is a major weakness. Another one of his weaknesses is an aversion to the word no. It’s not as if he can’t say it but he will agree to something he knows is wrong if he doesn’t want to disappoint someone else. When Hercules decides to throw a Bacchanal on Phil’s island, Hermes knows that a true Bacchanal is an intense party that even Mount Olympus has trouble keeping under control. Not wanting to disappoint the boy, or Bacchus he agrees to allow it despite his promise to Phil that everything would be fine. His desire to please others like in that case can get him into trouble. He gives in too easily to pressure, at least when it’s for something like a party. Conversely, he is adept at maintaining the rules at the Pantheon meetings such as when he did not allow Hecate to bring her minions to one of the meetings.

[When the feed starts the first thing that’s visible is the moogles paws. The little creature was trying to hand it to the latest arrival and wasn’t having much luck with it yet.]

Dig this crazy architecture, babe. Is this one of Hestia’s projects?

[The moogle shoved the communicator toward the arrival once more, this time its paws slipped off the lens revealing it’s recipient.. And what a peculiar looking arrival it was. His skin was blue in color, his hair which was mostly covered by a winged helmet was a darker blue, he wore winged sandals, sunglasses, and a toga.]

Funny, she didn’t mention this at the last meeting.

[Hermes zipped about looking everything over, while the moogle tried to keep up on the ground. It had been trying to explain the situation but as of yet hadn’t managed to get a word in edgewise. Finally, Hermes returned and hovered before the moogle.]

You don’t understand! You’re world has been swallowed by darkness, kupo. That is why you’re here.<.I>

My world? You mean Mount Olympus, Ha! That’s just too nutty. What a wild imagination, Just wild!

[Eventually he did accept the items but he was still doubtful about the moogles words having just come from there himself.]

RP Sample:

After conversing with the moogle, Hermes decided to head back to Olympus just to make sure everything was copasetic. Unfortunately, it was significantly smaller, there were no gates, no structures save for this massive coliseum. “This place, does look a little different.. Who okayed the extensive remodel?” Hermes asked himself as he flitted around the terrain. Stranger still, he didn’t run into any of the other Gods or Goddesses, not even one cherub, or anything. He paused near this set of large doors and hovered pondering his options. He gently tapped his kerykeion against the open palm of his other hand. “It couldn’t have changed this much in that period of time, maybe that cat was telling the truth.”

Nearing the large doors he caught the distinctive sound of clashing swords and the clanking of shields. At least there was some sign of activity. Entering the doors he stopped when he spied a familiar sight. “Philissimo!” He exclaimed. The satyr turned towards Hermes and grimaced at the name.

“Hey, keep it down, the kid is training in there and he needs to concentrate.” Was the goat man’s initial reaction before realizing how odd it was to even see the other here. Phil did a double take to make sure Hermes was actually there. “What cloud did you fall off of? Heh.. Don’t suppose you brought any of the others with you?”

“Woah woah, back the chariot up, babe.” What was Phil even talking about? “What others?”

“The other Gods and Goddesses, ring any bells?” Phil replied gruffly apparently not appreciating having to repeat himself.

“No kidding? They’re really gone?!” This was one of those rare situations when Hermes lost his cool. Deities don’t just disappear overnight. Not usually, anyway.

Phil grunted once more,” All but one..” Naturally it was the one God who kept continually trying to take over Olympus….
